about

Commemorating Friedrich Goldmann’s 70th anniversary, the CD presents four 'late' key works. In addition to the retail version, British magazine The Wire distributed the CD to its subscribers.

Friedrich Goldmann, who passed away in 2009, was one of Germany’s most distinct composers. Presented here are compositions that take a holistic approach to the full range of formal possibilities within avant-garde orchestral and ensemble music. Instead of working with discrepancies, as in his earlier periods, Goldmann shifts towards exploring perceptual continuums and amalgamations of material and techniques – for instance transitions between noise and tone or chromatic material and microtonality. This approach aims at overcoming assumed antagonisms between different layers of material. Within the resulting consistent gestalts, assumed parameter boundaries dissolve – challenging the conventional concept of musical material as a set of stable and discrete entities.
